Saturday the Department of Education is to launch the safe, caring and friendly schools initiative programme in hope that it would improve safety, security and the quality of learning at schools across the country.
“In 2007 the Minister of Education (Naledi Pandor) identified nine schools, one per province in which the National Department of Education made available R10 Million to help schools improve their security,” says spokesperson for the Minister, Lunga Ngqengelele.
Ngqengelele says these nine schools were provided with fences, security lights and gates, security guards and hand held metal detectors.
“In addition, management and learners were provided with training programmes aimed at assisting them to deal with challenges of crime and violence. The programme being launched is a continuation of the support already provided,” says Ngqengelele.
The launch is being held at Mountview Secondary School from 9 AM until 1 PM. Some of those attending will be Pandor and the Western Cape MEC for Education Cameron Dugmore.
