A 45-year-old man died after drowning at the Gwain River Mouth in the Wilderness on Tuesday.

“We launched our craft Serendipity and the South African Police Services, Metro Ambulance and Rescue responded,” says Hennie Niehaus, Wilderness Commander.

According to Niehaus the 45-year-old Pacaltsdorp man went missing in the water after he attempted to swim about 15 meters across the river in strong currents with an incoming tide.

“During a full-scale search the police dive unit found the body of the man who was confirmed dead on the scene,” says National Sea Rescue Institute’s Craig Lambinon.

Lambinon says it seems that the friends of the deceased had to rush for some 20 minutes to locate a cell phone signal before managing to alert the emergency services.
