A hundred shacks in Joe Slovo informal settlement were destroyed by fire on Sunday evening.
Greg Pillay spokesperson for Cape Town Disaster risk management says they were very fortunate as they have fire detection cameras and the alarm was sounded to alert them.
“This led to a rapidly response of 19 fire engines to the scene and we were also fortunate that we could deploy the use of helicopter with the mountain bucket,” says Pillay.
According to Pillay 250 people were left destitute
“They are being attended to by a CPO by the name of HDI Support they are providing blankets and meal,” says Pillay.
“People now are trying to settle back again, but they are struggling in terms of the material,” says Joe Slovo resident Mzonke Poni.
According to Poni the City has provided, blankets and food.
“We are currently place in a community hall, but most people chose not to go to a hall and those are accommodated by their neighbours,” says Poni.
