A worker employed at Atlantis Foundries has been crushed and killed by a machine in the workplace, this according to The National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa.
Leonard Sampulu (35) died at about 3:40pm on Tuesday.
According to the company the cause of the accident is not yet known. A full investigation is underway with the Department of Labour to determine the cause of death.
However NUMSA is greatly disturbed at the Department of Labour’s response to the incident, by not pitching for investigations.
“Atlantis Foundries works a multi shift system and that they have always argued that shift work is dangerous work for which employers can never compensate workers and their families,” says NUMSA regional secretary, Karl Cloete.
Despite these claims by NUMSA the company says that they will continue to do everything possible to ensure the safety of all employees.
The Managing Director of Atlantis Foundries, John Mcewan, expresses his deep regret on behalf of management and staff to the family for their untimely loss.
Atlantis Foundries, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz South Africa, produces automotive castings for both the passenger and commercial vehicle industries, and machines cylinder blocks and crankshafts.
