Proteas ace fast bowler Dale Steyn has moved up to the top of the ICC Player Rankings for Test bowlers joining Sri Lanka’s Muttiah Muralitharan who has been top of the bowlers’ list since February 2006.
Steyn’s progression up the list follows his display of impressive bowling against India that saw him claiming eight wickets and his eight hall of five wickets in an innings.
Steyn who has 897 rating points has joined Muralitharan who has dropped below 900 rating points for the first time since June 2006.
Steyn was praised by Coach Mickey Arthur and Captain Graeme Smith on his achievement seeing that it only took 22 matches for him to achieve this hallmark, while his predecessors Shaun Pollock took 33 and Alan Donald 41.
“It is an awesome achievement and something of which we are all very proud. He certainly deserves the success he has achieved,” commented Smith.
South Africa are currently placed in third position on the ICC Test team ranking and can take second spot from India if they win or draw Friday’s final test starting in Kanpur.
