Leader of the Independent Democrats Patricia de Lille says the continues delay of the Zimbabwean election results makes it clear that President Robert Mugabe does not respect the will of the voters.
“The people of Zimbabwe have spoken and the results of the election must be released immediately.
“The Independent Democrats is deeply suspicious of this delay and calls on African leaders in the AU (African Unio) and SADC (South African Development Community) to speak with Mugabe as a matter of urgency and insist that he allows democracy to take its course,” says de Lille.
She says the dictatorship in Zimbabwe should not be allowed to continue any further.
“Now is really the time for South Africa and other countries in the region to act decisively and support the democratic will of the people.”
Meanwhile it has been reported that a Zimbabwean High Court judge is to rule today on a petition by the opposition Movement for Democratic Change asking the immediate release of the presidential election results.
The MDC wants the court to put pressure on the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to stop delaying the announcement of last weekend’s presidential election results.
