The MEC for Agriculture in the Western Cape, Cobus Dowry is meeting with senior officials of the Guangdong Department of Agriculture in China to discuss ways in which agriculture can be improved within the two provinces.

In a statement released by the MEC he says the biggest challenge is to establish an agriculture sector that is export orientated - founded on the basis of well trained farmers with the use of suitable technologies.

“The Western Cape Agriculture Economic Strategy is focused on the creation of more job opportunities and enhancing productivity through skills development, global integration, creating opportunities for BEE, poverty alleviation and the development of the agriculture sector in Africa,” says Dowry.

The MEC says although China has a small model of farming they have been extremely successful in their agriculture sector.

He added that an agreement had been signed between the Western Cape and Guangdong to improve and strengthen cooperation in agricultural development.
