This morning the National Sea Rescue Institute were alerted by Clifton Surf Lifeguards after they launched a rescue to help four swimmers taking part in a Robben Island qualifying event at Clifton.
"The four victims, and adult female, two adult males and a 13 year old male, had suffered cramps and hypothermia while swimming from Clifton to Arcadia Rock in the 11 degree Celcius water conditions with heavy surf," says the NSRI Bakoven duty coxswain Johnny Albert.
It is believed that the 13 year old male was unresponsive after lifesguards had rescued him while a 50 year old British citizen was also suffering from cramps. They were both taken to hospital.
The remaining two that were rescued a male and female were both in a stable condition once their bodies were warmed up.
