The City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre started a campaign which aims to reduce the number of fires in informal settlements.
As part of the campaign, disaster risk management’s Charlotte Powell says that officials issue pamphlets to the public that highlight the dangers of using candles. The leaflet also provides practical tips on how residents can reduce their vulnerability to fires.
“We meet with the community and go out into the areas, where we create awareness about the dangers of fires. It has been successful and people have been taking note of the information we give them,” said Powell.
