Health officials across the world are scrambling to contain the outbreak of swine flu.

The death toll from the illness in Mexico has risen to at least 110.It is reported that new and suspected cases have emerged in other countries as far apart as Scotland and New Zealand.

The United States declared a public health emergency as 20 cases were confirmed in the country.

The World Health Organisation says the outbreak has "pandemic potential", but the world is better prepared than ever to withstand a pandemic. It stopped short of issuing a worldwide alert.
