3000 to 4000 grade8 and grade 12 school learners are expected to participate on the first Youth in Construction Expo that is going to be hosted by the City of Cape Town today.
The aim of the EXPO is to inform learners about the activities and career opportunities within the building and construction industry.
The Youth in Construction EXPO was initiated by the construction and building industries and the first event was held in Gauteng in 2008. This proved to be a big success and it was decided to extend the initiative to KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape in 2009.
“We want to give learners in the civil and technology sector an opportunity to be exposed on construction industry”. “Currently the country is experiencing a shortage of critical skills in this industry”.
“Learners will spend two hours at the EXPO which has three sections, one section for presentations, another where the construction companies will be exhibiting and the third, where they will be exposed to construction activities” said spokesperson for the City of Cape Town Farouk Roberts.
Several Departments will be participating as exhibitors to showcase the city activities that are linked to the construction industry. Those activities include Housing; Transport, Roads and Water and Sanitation.
The expo starts on the 18th to the 20th of August 2009
