With Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan about to table his maiden budget, a survey has shown that 46-percent of South Africans are positive that their personal economic situation, will improve in a year's time.

But the Ipsos Markinor poll ,also shows that when comparing their personal economic situation with that of a year ago, only 31 percent of South Africans believe that they are better off.

One of the reporters at the station spoke to members of the public about their expectations of the budget.

Many said they will welcome an increase in SIN Tax as this will promote healthy lifestyles.

However expect to hear an increase in social grants and more spending in job creating.

Independent economic commentator, Murray Leibbrandt of the University of Cape Town’s School of Economics, says they expect the minister to announce new policy initiatives, such as extended public works programs, as well as on education and health.

He says even though government is faced with little money to spend, the public expects increases in social welfare such as grants and pension.
