Traffic officers from the Operation Reclaim Unit arrested a man suspected of starting a veld fire in the Bonteheuwel area yesterday.
The fire started in Citrus Street an dwas raging close to two houses and a church. The suspected arsonist allegedly fled the scene and sought refuge in a house in the area.
“Members of the Operation Reclaim Unit were then able to arrest the suspect thanks to assistance from the community,” said Media Spokesperson for Cape Town Traffic Services, Chief Inspector Merle Lourens.
“The suspect was found with burn marks on his clothes as well as on the leather bag he was carrying,” added Lourens.
Community members threatened to assault the suspected arsonist following the arrest.
The City’s Fire and Rescue Services doused the fire within minutes of their arrival.
Bonteheuwel Police are investigating a case of arson.
