Several deaths have been reported in Fiji following the powerful cyclone Tomas that has battered the island for the past four days.
Australia’s ABC News reports that at least 50 homes, as well as hospitals and other public buildings, have been destroyed by cyclone Tomas.
200 shelters are providing refuge to 7 000 destitute people.
A state of disaster has been declared by Fiji’s interim government and New Zealand has announced it is sending an air force to assist in relief efforts.
Meanwhile, a magnitude 4.4 earthquake has struck near Los Angeles leaving no damage in America's second largest city.
The city was last shaken by an earthquake in 1994 that left 60 people dead.
