Eskom says they will be able to meet this year’s power demands, even with the added pressure of the Fifa World Cup, but they warned that the next two years will be tight unless new power generation facilities are made operational soon.
Eskom generation head Brian Dames says the proposed Medupi and Kusile coal-fired power stations will provide added capacity once they come on stream in 2012 and 2014.
Dames’ comments come just weeks after the World Bank granted Eskom a loan of 3-point-75-billion-US-dollars to get the Medupi power station up and running.
