Over 1000 members of the National Union of Mineworkers nationwide today downed tools at Lafarge over a wage dispute.
Chief amongst their demands workers want management to implement an 11 percent across-the-board salary increase.
Lafarge has both a cement and aggregate business unit.
Workers are also demanding a shift and housing allowance.
NUM has warned that the strike will have a negative effect on the construction industry.
