Cape Town Traffic Services has had a number of recent successes in its targeting of illegal drag-racing.

Metro Police Chief Inspector Merle Loures says this can be attributed to intensive action over the last few months, during which a number of specialised units were deployed in operations held across the city.

“During a recent operation Traffic Officers were able to arrest one of Cape Town’s most notorious drag-racers on Modderdam Road near Sacks Circle.

“The alleged suspect is said to be ‘unbeaten’ in the illegal street racing community.

He was caught driving an illegally modified vehicle in which the petrol tank had been removed and replaced with a 20 litre can of racing fuel on the back seat in order to make the vehicle lighter,” said Lourens.

Traffic Services also held a roadblock in Old Faure Road, Mfuleni over the weekend.

Nine people have been arrested for possession of and the cultivation of dagga in Marcus Garvey in Philippi East.

Metro Police spokesperson Nowell Petersen says members of the Philippi East police station destroyed huge dagga plantation earlier in the Philippi area.

During their raid we found and confiscated 950 dagga plants growing in a number of cordoned off yards.

The find was so huge that we needed to utilise one big police truck and 10 police vans to transport the dagga to the Philippi East police station.
