Archbishop Desmond Tutu has paid tribute to the many unsung heroes who helped bring freedom to South Africa.

He was addressing Youth Day celebrations at Noordhoek outside Cape Town attended by hundreds of young people.

Tutu says the country owes a lot to many people some are who not always honoured.

He says it is especially the youth that paid a heavy price for freedom.

Meanwhile, 2010 World Cup Organising Committee Chairperson Irvin Khoza will lay a wreath at the Hector Peterson Memorial in Soweto to mark the day.

Khoza says that generation made a huge contribution to the liberation of the country.

He adds that with South Africa hosting the FIFA World Cup, the world should remember the sacrifices they made.
