World Cup derby

This evening, all eyes will be on the Peter Mokaba Stadium as France and Mexico face each other in their first round World Cup match.

Last night’s disastrous three-nil loss to Uruguay means Bafana Bafana need France and Mexico to draw and then the South Africans must beat France by a healthy margin.

If this scenario does not emerge, Bafana Bafana will have no hope of making it into the next round.

On the other side the African side, Nigeria were dealt two blows in their World Cup match against Greece in Polokwane this afternoon.

A 16th-minute goal by Kala Uche raised hopes that the Super Eagles could become the second African team after Ghana to secure a victory at the tournament.

But then Sani Kaita was sent off with a red card for violent behaviour seven minutes before half time. And just before the end of the first half, Dimitris Salpingidis equalized for Greece.

Earlier, Argentina produced 92 minutes of soccer magic at Soccer City in Soweto to sink a brave South Korean side by four-one.

It was a team effort all the way, but Gonzalo Higuain was the man who slammed in a hat-trick of goals to carry Argentina to victory.

With their brilliant display, the South Americans have become the first team to qualify for the second round of the World Cup.
