A police officer has been shot dead by a gang of automatic teller machine in Braamfischerville, Soweto, on Friday.
The 32-year-old was responding to to one of two money machines that were targeted in the area.
Spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini says two ATMs were bombed just before midnight. A 40-year-old suspect was arrested on the scene. The rest got away in three cars.
A bakkie which was hijacked in Honeydew in July was recovered, along with some abandoned cash, a firearm and explosives.
