Police are investigating a murder, rape and possible suicide case after the body of a South African woman was found floating at sea, last month.
Akhona Geveza, a 19 year old from Nxarhuni in the Eastern Cape was part of the Transnet National Port Authority’s Maritime Studies programme, which aims to give young women a chance to explore careers at sea.
Media reported on Sunday that one of Geveza’s senior officers allegedly raped her but it is still unknown if she was thrown overboard or committed suicide.
Transnet is calling for an independent autopsy but Geveza has already been buried in the Eastern Cape.
The 19-year-old’s body was found adrift off the Croatian coast last month allegedly hours after she reported being raped by a senior officer.
The officers involved in the incident are now also under investigation after a number of claims of sexual abuse by cadets taking part in the Maritime Studies programme.
