Reitz Four case postponed

The students who humiliated the five cleaners in a mock video, who work at the University of Free State hostel in 2008, have appeared in court on Tuesday.

The state and defence attorneys in the Reitz Four trail have agreed that a fine is an appropriate punishment for the students.

The students defence lawyer J Kemp has stated that the four students should pay only up to R5000 each for the crime. He was also reported as saying that the students have suffered enough for making the video two years ago and it was never intentionally wanted to harm or demean the workers dignity.

The state prosecutor Johan Kruger has been quoted as saying “it does not matter that they only pretended to urinate in a mixture that was fed to them. The cleaners were still humiliated and embarrassed because the video was circulated to the public”.

Kruger wants the students to pay R15 000 each; the case has been postponed for Friday.
