Violent demonstrations erupted in Khayelitsha in Cape Town yesterday.
The shack dwellers’ body Abahlali baseMjondolo has blamed violence that erupted during protests on criminals taking advantage of peaceful displays.
At least two cars were set alight, journalists were stoned and streets were left littered with rocks and cement blocks.
It has since been calm in the township due to extensive visibility of police in the area.
Abahlali baseMjondolo has called for a national week-long protest to highlight the difficulties of people living in shacks.
