Co-operative Governance Minister Sicelo Shiceka says several flood-devastated areas in the country will be declared disaster areas this weekend.
The Minister says the Vaal area had previously been declared as crucial because of the Vaal dam.
More rain has been predicted for the Highveld which could cause more flooding.
The city of Johannesburg has set up a joint operations centre and a flood management task team to reduce the risk of any major flood disaster.
At least 38 people lost their lives while hundreds of homes were lost in floods which recently gripped parts of the country.
