Gauteng Education MEC Barbara Creecy announced yesterday that measures were in place to strengthen the teaching of literacy in the province.
Creecy was speaking to more than 7,000 primary school teachers in Johannesburg.
Gauteng province would like to increase the literacy and numeracy pass rate to 65 percent by 2014.
Teaching material in 2011 has been made simpler to assist in the classrooms.
Barbara Creecy also stated that primary school teachers would receive all the assistance they need to teach basic literacy properly.
