The South African government welcomes the resignation of Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak.

The Department of International Relations says it represents a victory of the will of the people and marks a dawn of a new era of democracy in Egypt.

Spokesman Clayson Monyela says the development creates conditions for a transitional process which will pave the way for a democratic dispensation in Egypt.

Monyela says South Africa remains ready to support a future transitional government in Egypt as it prepares to steer the country towards a new course of freedom and democracy. Mubarak resigned yesterday following more than two weeks of protests in Egypt.
