The Congress of South Africa Trade Unions says they will hold protests outside the houses of influential shareholders in an effort to stop the acquisition of Massmart by its American counterpart Walmart.
Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi says Pick n’ Pay chairperson Raymond Ackerman and Western Cape Premier Helen Zille can both help stop the deal from going through, as they can sway the opinion of the company board.
The multi-billion-Rand deal was approved by the Competition Tribunal in May, but Cosatu says they will strike if it is allowed to go through.
