Greenpeace International has lashed out at the negotiations at COP17/CMP7, calling negotiations in the past ten days as a disappointment.
Roman Paul Czebiniak who is the Senior Political Advisor on Climate Change and Forests at Greenpeace International said watching the negotiation in Durban has been like watching a train wreck.
Czebiniak added that an entire year of negotiations has gone to waste and they will be leaving Durban far worse then before.
Director of Policy at the Rainforest Foundation on Norway Nils Herman Ranum says there are two things negotiators need to address. Firstly the lack of progress and interest that was shown in the real implementation of safeguards. Secondly the strong over emphasises in building technical expertise to measure carbon while other aspects like addressing land and securing REDD strategy is not making efficient progress.
Greenpeace International says governments need to set up a framework for the protection of tropical forests. These include the establishment of a forest window under the Climate Fund, a common approach to safeguard biodiversity and the rights of indigenous peoples and local communities, national level reductions in deforestation and degradation and parties in Durban must reject the false solutions and deliver decisions on reference levels, safeguards and finance. #COP17
