Transport Minister S'bu Ndebele announced that 1,475 people have died on the country's roads during the festive season.

There has been a decrease of 76 deaths compared to the festive season of 2010 and 2011.

Ndebele made the announcement in Pretoria and said that reducing the country's road death toll is an urgent and non-negotiable task.

The Minister has also said that the death toll numbers could increase, should anyone in hospital still die from their injuries.

KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest death toll at 256, Gauteng with 207, and the Western Cape had 121.
