The ruling party's secretary general today said that former president Nelson Mandela will not attend the ANC's centenary celebrations in the Mangaung municipality in the Free State during the weekend.

Gwede Mantashe  says that it would be unreasonable for any South African to expect Tata Mandela to travel from Mthatha to Bloemfontein.

He also mentioned that he visited Mandela in his home town Qunu in the Eastern Cape during December. Mnatashe said that Mandela is in good spirits but very, very old.

Earlier in the week, ANC chairperson Baleka Mbete told journalists the party hoped Mandela would be able to be there.
