Archaeologists are investigating a construction site in the Cape Town CBD after builders’ uncovered early 19th Century foundations today.

Demolition has been stopped while the structures are being studied.

The archaeologists are experiencing difficulty as they sift through the wreckage to get to the very old foundation.

Four trenches have been dug to give the team an insight into what they are dealing with.

Archaeologist Katie Smuts estimated that the foundations were constructed between 1830 and 1850.

Smuts added that according to records they could have belonged to taverns, inns or workshops.

A collection of small artefacts including animal bones, pottery and porcelain were found.
