The ANC today called on Cape Town's Deputy Mayor Ian Nielsen, to step down over alleged maladministration.

The ANC officials said that the Auditor General found that a contract of almost R10 million was awarded without being subjected to a competitive bidding process.

Officials also alleged that contracts worth more than R10 million were awarded to municipal employees.

The Congress of South African Trade Union's General Secretary in the Western Cape Tony Ehrenreich said that Nielsen should be held accountable.

Ehrenreich further said this is a second year that more than a billion rand of public money was not spent.
