Preliminary reports show that the Easter weekend death toll has risen from 109 to 157 last night.
Officials say this is still a major drop from last year’s 297.
Over the weekend just over 17 000 officers were deployed for a massive road safety campaign across the country.
It was said that drivers who obey the rules of the road bring down the death toll.
The minister of transport Sbu Ndebele says that tribute must be paid to those motorists who are becoming more and more responsible.
However the Automobile Association feels it is too early to congratulate motorists.
High volumes of drunk drivers were arrested over the weekend according to the association.
