Home affairs minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma unveiled the new smart card identity document which was generally welcomed by people.
Dlamini-Zuma said that the pilot project aims to replace the current green bar-coded ID book.
She added that it has been on the cards since last year to pilot this smart card.
She said that the department has been doing the work quietly and now they will also unveil the prototype of the smart card which the department and GPW have been working on together.
