Over the past weekend, Western Cape traffic cops conducted about 24 road blocks.
Western Cape traffic Chief Kenny Africa said one man was arrested yesterday between Beaufort West and Aberdeen on the N1.
The man was caught speeding 179 km/ph in a 120 km/pm zone.
Africa said the 30-year-old man was kept at the Beaufort West police station and will appear in court this morning.
In the 24 road blocks 2639 vehicles were stopped of which 1271 were screened for alcohol.
Africa added that 20 of those drivers were arrested for drunk driving.
The highest alcohol reading on a driver was recorded in the Brackenfell area.
Africa said another three people were arrested for being in possession of dagga while a pedestrian was arrested for being drunk on the road way.
He added that 20899 screenings for speeding took place of which 2560 was prosecuted for exceeding the speed limit.
Three people were also killed on the provinces roads; one pedestrian was killed on the N2 near Caledon and two women died yesterday in a car crash in Sedgefield.
