Number of arrested motorists on the increase

In the first quarter of the year, more than 24 000 motorists were arrested as part of the New National Rolling Enforcement Plan (NREP).

About a million vehicles were checked in a month Transport Minister Sbu Ndabele announced in October 2010.

The department’s Spokesperson Logan Maistry said that during the same period last year over 4 million vehicles and drivers were checked, over 1 million fines issued and over 17 000 unroadworthy vehicles discontinued.

Maistry added that the fines varies from drunk driving, driving without valid licenses and excessive speed.

Maistry also said that some drivers had outstanding fines against them.
