On Tuesday Philippi police were conducting police operations when they spotted two men dropping objects in a bin in Agulhas Court in Hanover Park.
The police members chased after the two men and caught one.
Captain FC Van Wyk said that after police investigated what was thrown into the bin, they found that the two objects was a Z88 9mm pistol, a magazine and 15 live 9mm rounds.
Van Wyk said the 19-year-old suspect was arrested for the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
He added that because of the current gang violence, members of the public are urged to come forward with information about crime.
The suspect will appear in court once he has been charged.
Anyone with any information about crime are urged to call Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
