Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti has returned home early from the United States following a bomb that killed a teenager in the south and an earthquake that struck northern Italy yesterday.
Monti only stayed for the first session of the Nato summit in Chicago.
Thousands of people left homeless by the powerful earthquake had to spend the night in shelters as aftershocks continue to hit the region.
At least seven people died and more than 50 were injured.
