Surprise has come from the Institute of Security Studies after the appointment of businesswoman Riah Phiyega as the new National Police Commissioner.
The Institute’s Johan Burger said that Phiyega is the third successive person which has been appointed to the position despite not having experience in the service.
Burger interprets this as a possible lack of faith in senior officers by President Jacob Zuma.
Burger stressed that his concern has nothing to do with the fact that Phiyega is a woman.
