Several religious groups in South Africa have made recommendations for public holidays to the Cultural and Religious rights commission CRL.
At a public hearing held in Durban yesterday, religious groups said they want government to recognise their different annual celebrations such as Diwali, Eid and Ramadan.
The African Christian Democratic party called for Ascension Day to be reintroduced as a public holiday.
On the other hand the Rastafarian community said it has five annual celebrations and wants government to recognise at least two of them.
