The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said a tornado ripped through the Free State and the Vaal Dam, connecting with the Manten Marina in Deneysville.

The NSRI’s Craig Lambinon said the tornado caused massive destruction to boats and the Marina, as well as ripping the jetty apart.

He added that the tornado continued onto Rose Bay where it levelled a thatch roof house with 14 people inside.

One person died in the incident, one person was taken to hospital for a fractured arm and the remaining twelve people were treated for various injuries.

Lambinon said that they believe destruction was caused in Bethlehem including the death of a female after four shacks in an informal settlement was levelled to the ground by strong winds.
