The Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille says government has failed to respond to the youth unemployment crisis in South Africa.

Zille was delivering her speech at a Youth Day function in Soweto this afternoon.

She says unemployment can lead to a life of crime, and a lack of care about one’s future well-being.

She also said nearly half of the country’s population under the age of 25 remains unemployed.

Zille added that this contributes to a loss of hope and a breakdown of individual lives, families and communities.
