A new United Nations report shows that South Africa has emerged as a key producer of Amphetamine Type Substances, such as “tik”, for the Southern Africa region.

The report also pointed to an increase in cannabis use by South Africans.

The 2012 World Drug Report, released at the end of last week in Pretoria, was compiled by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

The Democratic Alliance Shadow Minister of Social Development Mike Waters says the World Drug Report should drive Minister Dlamini into action.

Waters says a lot needs to be done to ensure that substance abuse is eradicated in South Africa.

He added that currently the campaigns against the drug abuse are not working and something needs to be done urgently.
