Despite financial troubles the European Union is sponsoring the studies of 90 South African students to study postgraduate degrees in various fields at universities in Europe.

Students from ten local tertiary institutions are on their way to Europe as part of the EU-funded international Erasmus Mundus programme.

Spokesperson for the EU Delegation in South Africa Berene Kramer says higher education is key to a growing economy that will lead to a better life for all.

She adds that the reason the programme was established is because South Africa has a very serious shortage of high level human resources and low masters and doctoral achievements.
