Car bomb kills 78 people

A powerful car bomb killed at least eight
people and wounded another 78 in east Beirut yesterday.
It
was the first such attack in Lebanon 's capital since
2008.
One of the dead was a top Lebanese security
official closely allied to Sunni leader Saad Hariri.
Reports say the blast happened near the
headquarters of the Christian party, the Phalange, which is hostile to the
regime of President Bashar al-Assad in neighbouring Syria .
