Durban woman charged for false rape charge

A Durban woman has been fined for filing false rape claims in the Magistrate Court.

The woman informed magistrate Anand Maharaj that her reason for filing the rape charge was because she was upset.

Regional court magistrate has warned the woman about the seriousness of her actions, and said it had been the third time in just one week a woman had retracted rape charges because they were untrue.

The magistrate said wrongly accusing someone of a crime and said “it is disconcerting and does not bode well for women who have been raped”.
