Lamberts celebrate 100 years since gannets colonized Bird island

Cape Nature and residents from Lamberts Bay in the Western Cape will this month celebrate 100-years since the Cape gannets colonised Bird Island.

The island is one of six breeding colonies of the vulnerable seabird worldwide.

Cape Nature spokesperson Yves Chesselet says gannets remain important as they help direct small-scale fishermen towards good fishing spots.

The local community is also heavily dependent on the pulling power of the birds to draw local and international tourists to the town....
