Mining strike spreads to Iron sector

South Africa’s mining strikes have spread to the iron-ore sector. Kumba Iron Ore’s Sishen mine in the Northern Cape has now also been hit by unprotected industrial action.

The Anglo American subsidiary says only 300 of its workers are taking part in the strike and that most of the opencast mine is unaffected at this stage.

The company is unsure of the strikers’ demands.

This is due to the fact that they are not represented by any of the recognised unions.
