Police probe bomb blast

At least three prisoners were killed and several injured when a bomb exploded in a police van transporting them from the Randburg Magistrate's Court to Johannesburg Central Prison yesterday afternoon.Police are investigating whether the blast was part of an escape plot.

There were 36 awaiting trial prisoners in the truck and some were critically injured.

Two managed to escape but were re-arrested. Police spokesperson Neville Malila says the explosion happened on the corner of Naturena and the Old Soweto Highway.

Forensic experts are trying to determine which sort of explosive device was used.
