Gugulethu bucket system becoming a health hazard

Buckets have not been collected for the past three weeks in the Kanana informal settlement in Gugulethu, on the Cape Flats.

According to reports the company contracted to remove the buckets are having problems delivering the service.

The area has now allegedly become a health hazard.

Some residents have started dumping their waste on an open field near the settlement.

The City of Cape Town said it is assisting where it can. The dilemma came to their attention last month and the City then immediately started cleaning operations.

The City says residents have invaded private property, which makes it impossible for them to build toilets and therefore making it difficult to eradicate the bucket system.
